Analyse contents page

Q Magazine
Q Magazine is a music magazine mainly biased on popular music, but mainly of the rock genre. They have had interviews from U2 ,Adele, Oasis, Rihanna, Radiohead, Lady Gaga and more.They are published by 'Bauer Media Advertising' who also published 'Kerrang!' the music magazine.




House style
The colour pallet is constant through the front cover onto the contents page. The colour pallet of this magazine is red, black and gold. The use of a minimal amount of colours makes this magazine easier to navigate around. The use of colour also signifies a posh standard of presentation. The font is also constant throughout the magazine. 


Mode of address
The mode of address for this magazine is informal personal pronouns. This is used to entice the right audience. The target audience would be people who enjoy rock music and that genre and generic idea of that crowed are messy and informal. 


Layout
The layout of this magazine's contents page is sporadic. There are 8 images and 12 different pieces of text, so the righting to images ratio of fairly balanced with space between to make the page look less cluttered. The main contents and at the bottom of the page and these are quite regimented in the way they a laid out. The top Three quarters of the page are the main stories and cover stories being brought up again. The contents leaks onto the second page but then half of that page is used up by 'The Q Review'.


Type Face
This is all the same or similar Font styles to avoid unwanted confusion. There are a few irregular uses of fonts but these are well uses when applied to show something is different to to make it stand out. 
      

Institution


Cover analysis

Masthead
The masthead is at the top left of the page to make it bold and when stacked in a shop. The use of the bright red colour and white bold letter also makes the Masthead emphasized. The white back drop and minimal colour use of the text has help to extenuate the once use of text that is not in black.
Splash
The left sided central text draws the eye in and the larger, more bold font also accentuates the writing. The connection with the splash and the central image is that 'Wild Thing' is a classic Jimi Hendrix song and the image is of Jimi Hendrix in a classic Jimi Hendrix pose.
Puff
The puff use on this magazine is in the style of a sticker connoting something extra, such as a CD or guide to the greatest albums of all time. In this case it is a 'Worlds greatest album guide'. The use of the colour blue also makes this stand out as something special becasue this colour is only used once on the whole cover. 
Central Image   
This is the main source of life and interest of the magazine cover. It is a famous image of Hendrix but the image is also quite old. The old aesthetic of this image is very old and distorted so this style is continued through into the house style, using old borders and faded colours in the backgrounds of all the elements.
Layout
This is a simple layout with a minimal amount of writing witch give the cover a clean and tidy look which is suitable for the target demographic of the magazine.
Mode of Address
The mode of address for this magazine cover is informal becasue of the use of the phrase 'TA-DAAA'. This is not dialect used in formal circumstance but used usually in friendly conversation. The phrase is also used in magic and some people thought of Hendrix's   guitar skills as magic so another correlation there.

The Evlauation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? 

For my student magazine front cover i used a Masthead, Splash, puff, central image, contents, and house style of red white and blue. I used these colours because they are primary and therefor stand out from each other, and also are androgynous (this give my magazine a more sparse range for target audience). The colours are also not over luminous, so they are formal yet outstanding, giving the magazine a sophisticated and enticing appeal. My central image is of my face and torso standing outside with campfire, smoke and a sunset. The image, initially, was of a dark composition so i had to proses it through a filter to lighten up the key arias (face, backdrop). I have carried the house style through into the contents page where the back drop is an off white and the writing is black and red. I have carried through the Masthead but moved it to the spine of the page. The images used of a different style and composition to show versatility and range. The mode of address on my magazine is non-formal so as to relate to the target market. This way of speech connotes that the readers are being spoken to and not at. The magazine title is 'Arty Farty' and this type of language is not usually used in a magazine because its seen as unkempt and rude, but the use of it is different and i feel it would bring in readers because of its taboo title.

 How does your media product represent different social groups?

To make my magazine have versatility of audience attraction i used an open colour pallet( red, blue, white, and black) so as the magazine is not uni-sex. I have also made the content appropriate for either sex, by including news on harry styles, and news on Will I Am. There is gossip, Fashion, new songs or artists and student discounts are just some content that already shows an androgynous look at target audience. 

What kind on media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Ludlow college would be the primary distributor/instituter for my student magazine as it is made by ludlow college students for ludlow college students. The college would also print and publish it, as well as selling it for £1. I feel it would be good for it to be sold from the reception aria. It would be easier for the students to get hold of but if any of the community wanted it.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

My magazine would be predominantly for the students of ludlow college because its made and sold there, but its not only for them my magazine would be readable by anyone of the local aria, but anyone out of the local aria probably wound understand some of it because of some of it being about the college and the local aria (ludlow). 

How did u attract/ address your audience?

I used my colour pallet to make it stand out as appealing for any sex. I used the central image to give it a professional look, becasue of the sunset and smoke, so that students might see someone they would like to emulate. I have used the content page to show a load of new found information about subjects and hobby's that many students would enjoy reading about. The hobby's chosen are specific to the social groups i know, so there are gaming pages and music pages and so on. 


What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of constructing this product ?

I have learnt many new skills and techniques the the proses of making my magazine front cover and contents page. Initially i had to research student magazines, and from that i learnt a new way to successfully research. This also showed me what to notice about a magazine and why its there, this skill was used for me to see what i needed to ad to my own work. I also learnt some key terms and devises that i didn't know before, such as; Splash, Masthead, coverline, puff etc. I have also been taught how to use 'In Design' which  is a software that i used to make designing and processing my magazine easier and quicker. I have not used 'In Design' before so it is completely new to me ,And at first i really struggled because for ever new part of the magazine i would have to put down a new layer and that confused me, but once i go the hang of it i found it much easier to use and found that it was helping me as apposed to hindering me.

A summary The Q&A

The answer i got from my chosen target market audience for what title they preferred out of 'Arty Farty' or 'The Student Bible',was Arty Farty because they said it would be more creative. They said that they would prefer the front cover to be loud and bombastic, and some commented that cartoon style would fit in well with that genre. The types of thing they said they would look for in a desirable student magazine would be advertising and things like festival and what happened at the last festivals and what celebs' turned up. they also commented that there should be puffs and compositions. They answered that they would spend from 50p to 1:50 depending on what is offered. The panel commented that the language has to eloquent to a point so as to entice a scene of learning but not formal, so eloquent and chatty(edited to the times). They finally commented on what type of famous gossip they would like to include. They would like to know a summary of whats happening with the A Lister's. They would also like to include news about popular shows such as 'Adventure time'.
